Anchored by Barclays Center to the north and Prospect Park to the south, Prospect Heights is a popular residential neighborhood in central Brooklyn.
It is characterized by picturesque, tree-lined streets as well as distinct single-family row houses, most of which were built in the middle 19th and early 20th centuries in Italianate, neo-Grec, and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. It is also home to a number of important cultural institutions, including the Brooklyn Public Library, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Like much of the city, the neighborhood of Prospect Heights has a rich history that is entwined with the origins of the nation. During Dutch settlement, the land was composed of wild forests and small farmstead. After the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Prospect Heights—along with several other would-be neighborhoods—bore witness to The Battle of Brooklyn (also known as The Battle of Long Island), the first major engagement of the American Revolution. Significant residential development took place the mid-19th century and continued throughout the early part of the 20th century. The next major change to come to the neighborhood was the construction of Barclays Center and the continued development of Pacific Park, an innovative residential area and public greenspace slated for completion in 2025.
The main neighborhood corridors for restaurants, bars, cafes, and shops include Flatbush, Vanderbilt, Washington, and Atlantic Avenues. Highlights include Ample Hills Creamery, ramen spot, Chuko, and Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbecue. Subway lines serving the neighborhood include the 2/3/4/5/B/Q.
